Biography

Mary E. Hylton is Chair of the Graduate Program and Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at the Salisbury University. Dr. Hylton is the recipient of three teaching awards and, most recently, the Community Chest of northern Nevada’s 2017 Social Justice Hero award. She teaches policy practice, structural oppression, social welfare policy, and lesbian and gay lives. Her research focuses on the intersection of civic literacy and civic engagement, in particular the development of democratic forms of engagement, including voting, among young people. Dr. Hylton developed and ran an applied civic literacy project with local adolescents and is also co-principle investigator of the Policy Practice Academy.
