I’m Heidi Anderson, LCSW and co-founder of a non-profit that provides trauma informed mental health services to foster and adoptive children and families. I am currently writing my doctoral thesis researching traumatized adolescents and their needs in treatment. I’ve had postgraduate training in play therapy, sandtray, trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy, substance use, child and family trauma, as well as neurobiological attachment.
My background of working with adjudicated adolescents as well as with foster children in a group home setting has allowed me to identify the unique needs of trauma within families. Research has shown that attachment to parents affects the brain structure of a child, even before they are born. Due to the presenting needs of early trauma, including emotional dysregulation and the struggle to adjust to changing family dynamics, longer-term specialized therapy is needed. My treatment services include group and individual settings of sandtray, play therapy, insight into how the brain works to promote healing, and ultimately focus on the client in the therapeutic relationship.
