Sexual Trauma and its effect on African American Girls/Women Health Behaviors
Over the past few years, considerable efforts have focused on bringing awareness to various forms of sexual trauma, While we continue to bring awareness to sexual trauma, it is important we begin to discuss the effects sexual traumatic experiences can have on health outcomes such as physical, mental, and sexual issues for an African American girl and woman.
As professionals, it is our responsibility to create safe spaces, use strength-based approaches, and allow our clients to write their own narrative through a trauma informed approach. As we create spaces that foster safety, we can begin to help survivors heal through their trauma and reduce health Disparities in the African American community.
Understand the history sexual trauma has on African American women health behaviors.
Develop and utilize techniques that focus on sexual trauma and health interventions through strength-based approaches. Begin to develop to begin the “ healing “of sexual trauma in African American women where stigma exists.
Understand the importance of integrating health resources that African American women value significantly. The skills learned will help professionals learn cognitive modification skills that consider perception, attitude, and culture of African American women.
